Raising A Ring Tail Lemur: Facts You Shouldn’t Miss

Raising a ring tail lemur entails a lot of responsibility since you’re going to have to take care of an exotic pet in your own home. Exotic animals are called so because they’re a lot different from the usual house pets that people take care of in their households.

Before deciding on raising a ring tail lemur at home, you first need to read thoroughly about the type of exotic pet that you want to bring home with you from the pet store. The first thing you need to know about these exotic pets would be their physical characteristics. Ring tailed lemurs are called so because they sport black and white rings on their tails. The name lemur on the other hand, is derived from the Latin word, which means spirits or ghosts because this exotic animal is known to be nocturnal in nature. However, ring tailed ones are known to be diurnal and they are also known to be somewhat terrestrial as compared to other species of lemurs. Even though they are arboreal, these animals spend around 33 percent of their time on the ground. In fact, ring tailed lemurs are known to be the most terrestrial among all the species of lemurs. Even though they’re already an endangered species, they still remain to be really popular among pet lovers because of their really cute looks and social nature.

These animals are larger in size as compared to other species since they range from 40 to 50 cm in terms of body length. What’s amazing is that their tails are longer than their body length. Their tails average from 56 to 65 cm. These are furry and have black and white rings as well as a black tip. The number of black rings is higher than the number of white rings. Their bodies on the other hand are covered with black skin and have fur that’s grayish in color. However, some of them have rosy brown fur. They have white patches on their face, chest, ears, underbelly, and throat. Their face is pointed and they have a snout that resembles that of a fox, which is black in color. Their amber-colored eyes are also covered with black skin and somewhat resembles that of a mask.

Let’s move on to the habitat and diet of these cute little animals. They are native to the island of Madagascar. They are often found in highland areas. They love staying in places where there are lot of trees specifically those that have horizontal branches on them. Even though they’re omnivorous in nature, they typically feed on flowers, fruits, bark, sap, leaves, and herbs. They also love feeding on the pods and leaves of the tamarind tree. Aside from that, they also eat grasshoppers, spiders, small birds, chameleons, caterpillars, and lizards. Moreover, they also eat the cocoons of insects, spider webs, and decayed wood. They feed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.…

Electronic Fences and Bark Collars

Some owners find that the electronic devices work when other behavior modification solutions fail. The negative feedback of the static electric shock, combined with proper training, can help curb unwanted behaviors. These devices have been used to control hunting dogs in the field, to keep dogs from nuisance barking, and to prevent dogs from entering certain, off-limits areas. In addition, there are specific situations where containment is needed and above-ground fences are not allowed. In a case such as this, buried electric fences are the logical alternative. Finally, there are times when shock deterrents are the only form of behavior modification that work to correct a problem. When other attempts fail and the dog’s behavior may lead to removal from the household, electronic collars are a viable alternative. This is often the case with dogs that bark incessantly.

If one is considering the use of electronic correction collars, it is important to learn how they work, how the dog needs to be trained, and which options are available. These training collars work on the concept that an animal will learn to avoid the discomfort of a static electric shock by avoiding the situation that caused the shock. The use of a transmitter and a collar allow the correction to be administered when the owner is not visibly present or touching the dog. Ideally, the dog will believe that the correction is caused by the behavior, not the owner, and learn to avoid the behavior, and therefore prevent future corrections. These types of collars are primarily used to control unwanted behaviors that occur when the dog is physically separated from the owner.

Not all training collars are the same. When choosing a remote-training collar, it is important to identify the stimulus that sets off the correction, the type of correction, and the size of dog that the collar is intended to be used on. Also, check if the collar can be set to different levels of sensitivity (what triggers the correction) and different levels of stimulation (intensity of the correction). Other concerns would be the type of battery (rechargeable, replaceable), the weight of the collar, and whether or not it is waterproof. The combination of these traits will allow you to choose the most appropriate collar for your pet. These collars are available either as training collars, which allow the owner to remotely administer a corrective stimulation in response to an unwanted behavior, or as anti-barking collars, which administer a pre-programmed correction in response to barking and do not require the owner to be present.

Electronic training collars consist of a hand-held transmitter and a receiver attached to a dog collar. Usually, the collars have several levels of stimulation. Many have features that allow the owner to alter the length of the static correction as well as its intensity. Some have a ‘good dog’ tone that the dog is taught to associate with a correct behavior. These collars require training of both the owner and the pet to avoid …

Raising A Pet Coatimundi: Tips On Feeding And Others

When you’re raising a pet coatimundi at home, you have to do some serious studying and research as to how you can properly nurture these kind of exotic pets. Even though, they’re going to be house pets like your usual cats and dogs, you have to know that they are a lot different from the latter.

In this article, we will be looking at different tips on raising a pet coatimundi at home. Let’s start with feeding. When baby coatis are already old enough, you can get them from their mother already so that you can start feeding them through the use of a bottle. When you start bottle feeding your baby pet coatis, it’s a good thing to start with puppy replacer milk. You can use a cup of this and mix it with 2 cups of water. To make it taste better, you can add a small amount of honey into the mix. At the start of weaning, baby coatis will often consume half to an ounce of milk during each feeding. You should feed them 4 times in a day. When they start getting used to feeding on the milk that you’re giving them, the amount that they consume per feeding will increase to an average of 2 to 3 ounces. Even though you may notice an increase in their appetite, it’s best that you don’t overfeed them. At the age of 6 to 8 weeks, your pet coatis may start developing loose stools. When this time comes, you should add in 1 tablet of Lactaid to each cup of milk that you use when mixing up their formula. Be sure to mix 24 hours in advance.

As your pets start growing bigger, you can shift them to Purina Puppy Chow until they grow into yearlings. During that time, you can then shift them to Purina Chow for Adult Dogs. Keeping these types of exotic pets inside large birdcages that have hammocks and blankets inside is really advisable. The hammocks and blankets will serve as their sleeping materials. When your pets start becoming active, you should see to it that the door of their cage is left open so that you can allow them to go in and out. In this way, they can play freely when they want to. After you feed them, it is best that you let them back in their cage so that they can do their thing and take a nap afterwards. These exotic animals are quite easy to paper train. They usually use a corner of their cage when they’re doing their business. However, like other types of pets, they will also make mistakes at times.

Coatis are known for their curious and active nature. They love moving around all the time except during nap time. When you have a pet coati at home, it’s like you have a 2 year old child who needs to be well guarded. You have to make your house child proof so that you can …

Ear Mite Remedies

Ear mites are nasty little surface parasites that commonly infect dogs, cats, rabbits, and ferrets. They live in and around the ears of these animals. They are the second most common external parasite that infects our pets (the flea has the top ranking of the most common). Unlike the flea, ear mites spend their entire lifecycle on an animal, and they spread through direct contact with another animal that is infected.

There are numerous symptoms that pets exhibit any time they have a problem with their ears. These include shaking their head, scratching at their ears, and areas of hair loss around the ear, caused by the pet scratching. The characteristic that distinguishes mites from other ear maladies is the thick, black, tar like substance (sometimes it is black, dry and flaky), that is found in the ear canal. Although veterinarians typically diagnose ear mites by performing a microscopic smear of the ear debris, the presence of mites is easy to detect when you know what this discharge looks like.

Do you wonder if ear mites cause discomfort in our pets? Imagine what it is like when you have that itching sensation inside your ear. You know, the one that sends you searching for a q-tip to stick in your ear in an effort to scratch it? Now just imagine that the itch is being caused by tiny little parasites crawling around in your ear, and that you are without the ability to do anything about it! It would most likely drive you crazy… and that is what a pet with mites in their ears must live with.

Getting rid of your pet’s ear mites takes time. While there are a lot of preparations to kill mites, some are prescription and some are over the counter, there is no “magic bullet” that will kill all mites overnight. I have not personally seen ANY medication that I could say that works any better than the others (and that includes the most expensive ear mite remedies sold through veterinarians!). In order to eliminate ear mites, there are three things that you must do.

You must treat ALL of the animals in your house by cleaning and treating the ears daily, sometimes for as long as 21 days. An oil based product for cleaning and treating the ears usually works best, since the oil will smother the mites and softens the black discharge in the ears, allowing for easier removal.

Since ear mites can and will crawl around on the skin outside of the ears, you should treat the skin of all pets also. This may include using a topical product, such as “Revolution”, sold through your veterinarian, or using natural home remedies, such as the ones for treating fleas.

It is highly recommended that you treat the indoor environment of your house at least once. Even though ear mites do not live very long once they are off of the animal, you do not want to risk contamination of your pet by …

3 Things to Consider When Feeding Your Horse

In many respects, caring for a horse can be a fulltime job. Not only do have a substantially longer lifespan than many other animals, they also require a great deal more attention. This is particularly apparent when it comes to feeding practices. Whereas most other animals can simply be given their food for the day and left alone, horses need more attention paid to their dietary needs. Taking the time to arm yourself with the proper knowledge can prove tremendously helpful in keeping your horse well-fed. As such, new horse owners would be wise to consider the following factors when feeding their animals.
1. Horses are Natural Grazers
By nature, horses are grazing animals. This means they’re liable to become bored, restless and hungry if they don’t have grass and/or hay to graze on throughout the day. If your horse is left in a pasture and has ready access to high-quality grasses, it isn’t going to need much hay. Conversely, if your horse spends most of its time in a grassless area, it will need access to a steady amount of hay. Furthermore, if your pastures dry up and die during the winter months, you’ll need to provide your horse with enough hay to account for the lack of grass. Since good feeding practices are every bit as important as comprehensive horse insurance, don’t skimp on the grazing materials.
2. Administer Grain in Several Servings
When administering your horse’s daily grain, avoid dishing it all out at once. In addition to being bad for the animal’s digestion, eating its main meal in one sitting promotes hunger and boredom in horses. For best results, split your horse’s daily grain into two or three servings.
3. Adhere to a Set Schedule
Horses are creatures of habit. With this in mind, it’s in your best interest to set a feeding schedule and stick to it. Not only will this prevent your horse from feeling wayward and anxious, it will promote healthy digestion – which is vital to keeping horses in peak physical condition.
Taking care of a horse is a far cry from owning dog, cat or any other traditional pet – and never is this more apparent than feeding time. Fortunately, providing your horse with the proper sustenance doesn’t have to be an arduous chore. Familiarizing yourself with the best feeding practices for horses is sure to serve you well in your efforts to provide your animal with a healthy diet.…
