Stress and the Pain of Smoking Cigarettes

During infancy a child under stress normally reaches for a parent to find some comfort. Stress to a child is obviously a lot different then that of an adult, a child could be under stress because he or she does not have the toy they want, they might want a nappy change or they are over tired.

Overcoming Stress and Anxiety

For a child overcoming the pain of stress and anxiety in most circumstances can be achieved with a bit of guidance, and in many situations the effects of stress is almost always going to also be related to growing and learning.

It would be irresponsible to hand a child a cigarette and advice him or her to take a few puffs. But funny as that may seem I have seen a few alarming videos on the net where children as young as two are smoking, but that’s a matter for another time. Children do not typically pick up a smoke to overcome pain and anxiety

Where is the Connection with Stress and Smoking?

The problem for smokers is that the act of smoking becomes a link with the emotion of stress. Of course this is not what happens in the beginning, as in the early days when a smoker is learning to be a smoker these links have not yet been formed in the subconscious mind.

We all have a natural inbuilt ability to help us overcome stress; however with some of the pressure of modern society it becomes increasingly difficult to find this release, so our bodies begin to look for other ways to increase the release it is looking for.

So in the beginning the subconscious mind of a smoker begins to learn at an incredible rate, so every moment smokers have a smoke the activity and the emotions being experienced at that time are chalked up and remembered. So the next time the smoker has a smoke when experiencing the same emotion and or activity it places another chalk mark against it.

Stress becomes linked with Smokes

Then as we say the rest is history… After the subconscious mind chalks up enough events and circumstances where the activity of smoking and stress have occurred at the same time a natural link is formed in our minds.

Our bodies experience the rush of nicotine and the intake of air deep into our lungs, thus we experience the calming effects and this then becomes our natural fix in times of stress. Regardless if the fix obtained from smoking is only felt for a short period of time it still becomes an instant response in times of stress and anxiety, our subconscious minds have no choice but to present us with the activity of smoking as a way to relieve the stress we are under.
