The PetSafe Stubborn has the strongest correction on the market. A good all round system, that is compatible with other PetSafe in-ground systems, and a very good value for the money. Our philosophy when working with dogs is that the correction only needs to be strong enough to recapture their attention so that they refocus on the dog fence and their boundary training. The correction should be unsuccessful but not overwhelming. Going too high is counterproductive, you want the dog to stay receptive to the training. The PetSafe Stubborn is useful for large dogs (100+ lbs) and for dogs with low sensitivity to pain.
The collar is one of the chunkiest collars around. This is not a big deal on this system, because there is no way you would use this on a dog under 40lb, it is just too strong. It uses a regular 9V battery that is accessed by undoing these screws. You can change the correction level by undoing the cover with a coin and pressing the button underneath. The collar uses both a beep and a vibration to warn the dog before they get a correction. The prongs on the collar are interchangeable, you can swap out the standard prongs for longer prongs for long hair dogs. Although, as of November 2009 these are something that no longer comes standard with the system and are now an optional extra.
The best feature about this collar is that it can work with the other PetSafe in-ground collars. So you can use this collar on the large dogs (great danes, mastiff) / low pain sensitivity dogs (pit bulls, bulldogs, German shepherds). With small dogs under 12 lbs, you should use the PetSafe Little Dog. For everyone in between, you should use the PetSafe Deluxe collar. All three of these are good collars, each of these let you adjust the correction level independently and they work nicely together.
This is the strongest dog fence correction collar available, so when you get it, start on the lower levels and move up only if your dog is unresponsive to the lower levels.
The base station is included with the stubborn dog and the basic PetSafe unit. It is also used on the Basic Inground fence. It works well and reliably, the only limitations are that it can only do 10 acres, and it does not have a battery backup. On the base station you have all the standard functions, the dial lets you control how wide the boundary is on either side of the boundary wire. The side switch lets you set up the system for small, medium, and large yards. The two toggles let you attach the boundary wire. Lastly you have the status lights to tell you the system is one, and that there are no breaks in the wire.
The system comes with the standard 500 feet of 20 gauge boundary wire, two splices and 50 flags which is good for about 1/3 of an acre. More kits and wire upgrades are available in the store section of our website.
This is a nice reliable system. It is also really good value for money. A little tip, if you are going to be using collars from the PetSafe Deluxe, Stubborn and Little Dog, buy the PetSafe stubborn system and buy only the collars for the Deluxe and Little Dog. This will save you about about eighty bucks over doing it the other way.
